1) The school was originally called the New England College, but in 1825 it changed its name to what we know today as stanford university.

2) In 1769, a group of students from other colleges in Massachusetts formed a new college at the same location and named it after themselves: they were known as the "New England Association." They soon became dissatisfied with their association's lack of independence and decided to form a separate institution.
