Interesting facts about roundworms
10 Interesting facts about roundworms most are invalid.
1) Roundworms are a parasite that live in the intestines of humans and animals, but they can also be found in other animals such as cats and dogs.
2) The worms have no mouth or eyes, so you don't even need to worry if you touch one. They just crawl along your skin until they reach the area where you eat.
3) You probably already know this, but roundworms can cause an infection called trichinosis when they burrow into the body's tissues.
4) Before you freak out, you should know that infection is incredibly rare. Most people don't even know they have roundworms, let alone have an infected one. But, it is possible to get infected after eating undercooked pork, which can include ham, hot dogs, or even some jerky. (But who doesn't love jerky!?)
5) You can't get infected by roundworm just by being near someone who has one. You have to actually eat undercooked pork, and then have a roundworm burrow into you.
6) If you do pick up a roundworm, there isn't really any danger as long as you get treated early. The worms are so small they can't really do a lot of damage on their own. They only become dangerous when they start to get big and eat away at the body's organs.
7) If you do have a roundworm, there's no way to know for sure unless an ultra-sonogram is performed. Even doctors don't really know how many people in the U.S. have worms. It's likely that many people have them, but don't know it, since when they go to the doctor for other reasons, their physicians aren't going to perform an ultra-sonogram just for fun.
8) You might be thinking, "Well, if you don't know until ultra-sonogram, how do I get rid of them?" The short answer is you can't. But, you should know that it's very unlikely that you actually have roundworms. It's more likely that you have another disease or an unrelated piece of skin in the wrong place. If roundworms were to be found, they'd probably only be ones the physician finds in the ultra-sonogram. (Just like the ones you find in undercooked pork! Hah!)
9) There is no medication that you can take to get rid of roundworms. Instead, the best line of treatment is seeing a dermatologist. He or she will do something to remove the infected skin and hopefully get rid of the worms with it. However, it is possible that the worms will re-enter your body if the area where they entered is no longer sterile. So if you've been having trouble sleeping, that might be bad.
10) There is another lesser-known worm that causes infection in humans, but it's even less likely that you have it. The tapeworm doesn't live in the intestines like roundworms and other flatworms (which includes e.g. flukes), it lives in the liver. People can harbor tapeworms without knowing it. The worms are internal, so they can't come out to cause infection. They can, however, grow to huge lengths of several feet. Stories of tapeworms that long have people convinced they're the stuff of nightmares. However, that's not the case, and the only danger a person with a tapeworm has is liver damage over time.
So those are some of the fake interesting facts about roundworms.
